I have about 3 inches slack in the steering wheel of my 55..Can i take this out with the adjustment on top of the steering box without getting involved with moving shims..THNKS

Maybe. Depends if the box has been adjusted before and if all the slack is in the box or partially from the other steering components.

The book says the steering gearbox needs to be adjusted on the bench. I know its a lot of work, but that also allows you to clean out all the dried lubrication, and check bearings. When I cleaned mine out, I used straight STP for lube. It works great.

STP works great in the box, found when taking the slack out of the box (adjusting) lifting the car seems to work better than when its on the ground.

I have for years, used Lucas Oils heavy duty oil supplement with no problems. It is like honey in consistency

Most likely a tooth broken off of the sector shaft inside the box or a severely worn worm gear. Parts are available from various sources to replace this. Not too hard of a job once the box is out of the car.
