I have been looking for about a year now for a gas tank for my 55 wagon. Haven't even been able to find a good used one but would prefer a new repo. Any ideas? Thanks

Never seen a re pro, but I have seen one from one of our Australian friends he cut a giant hole in the top, got in there and cleaned with wire brush then welded the top back on. on my 56 wagon I cut the bottom half off and made a new bottom half with electric fuel pump built in for a EFI 5.o conversion. Makes for a nice tank.

Well I have a 55 Courier wagon that needs a new gas tank or something. This thing came from a junkyard somewhere and the bottom of the tank is bashed in so you never really know how much gas is in the tank because that is where the sending unit float sits at the bottom. Really difficult to plan a long trip since I have never been able to accurately check the fuel mileage due to this.
Nobody makes repro tanks for the wagons even though the wagons are as popular as ever.
I would recomment NOT buying a tank sight unseen over the phone. They want $250 for a wagon tank that looks like a big pile of rust and all dented up and they seal the tank with liquid liner before sending it to you. They dont blow air into the outlet tube and it is sealed up so the gas cant get out of the tank into your fuel line.
Only thing I can recomment is call Johns salvage in Cabool, Missouri and see if he will let go of the 55 wagon tank he has down there. I talked to him about it once and he didnt want to mess with it.
Huxels salvage in Union, Missouri has a 55 or 56 Mercury wagon down there. Call him and ask him about it. His name is Bill Huxell and he was always real nice and went out of his way to help me whenever I went down there.
Both John and Bill always allowed me to pull my own part whenever I went to see them but you better ask about that. Over here in Southern Illinois people have been real bad about law suits so most of the places would never hear of you pullin your own part. I used to get a lot of stuff from Dans used parts in Mascoutah, Illinois and he was more paranoid about it than anyone I ever knew. But I knew him since the early seventies and he trusted me not to sue him over a stupid little cut or even a major accident after I explained to him that I wasnt that kind of breed.
So good luck and I hope you find somethin suitable.

I have seen many posts for folks looking for tanks for wagons and Couriers and no one is making them, the early Mustang tanks are supposed to be a close fit and are about the cheapest as they are more common, look for a Mustang restoration parts supply in your area and do some measuring you will probably use your old filler neck on the new tank.

Thanks everyone. I may just buy a new one for a sedan and cut it up and make it fit. The spare tire well has to fit in the top so it should be too hard.
