I have come into possession of a 1955 8 passenger Mercury wagon, but can't find much info on how many were made or how to decode a Canadian VIN. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

You can try posting the information you have and then see if someone can decipher it.
Pictures would be good too.

Finding the Canadian numbers is going to be tough.

I can help with the good ole US of A numbers :) for the 1955 model year.

Mercury 79B Station Wagon-14,134

Mercury Monterey Station Wagon - 11,968

Best I can do.

If you find Canadian build numbers reference information , please let us know.
Its probably a book that still should be written.

I can probably help with decyphering the Canadian data plate for you.

Thanks for the info on the numbers. It would seem the car was made in the USA, but sold in Canada. I went to a few web sites and put in the VIN, but got no info. It appears to have been sold in Canada, so maybe the export cars had different numbers.
The VIN is 55WA55368M
Style BV79B
Body specifics 65-588-0-16-411

The car is pretty far gone but is complete. I`m not good at getting pictures onto forums, but I would like to know what the has or should have for rear end, trans etc.

Thanks

Here's what I've found for you:
55WA55368M
55 - Year of manufacture
WA - Assembly plant, WA - Wayne MI
55368 - Sequential number
M - Mercury line
Style BV79B - Station Wagon (8 Pass.)

Still working on the body specifics:
65 is a paint code
588 is a trim code

Some information seems to indicate that Mercury "passenger cars" weren't produced in Canada for that year. The VIN on the left door pillar should indicate the assembly plant. Oakville and Windsor, Ontario were assembly plants for Canada but I think Oakville was for trucks. If it has a code for a US plant like Wayne, Metuchen, Los Angeles, or Saint Louis then it was manufactured in the US.

Thanks for the information on the car. I know from the patent plate the car was manufactured in the US as I suspect were all Merc wagons. What I couldn`t find was how many 8 passenger wagons were made and I suspect this car is fairly rare.
I was debating about rebuild or parts, but the more I got into it the more I realized just how rough and rusty this thing is. The tail lights and front sway bar will go into my `55 Meteor and the rest will be up for grabs,

Thanks again for the info.
