55 merc /55 Ford automatic trans

Are the 55 Merc and ford trans very similar except for the tailshaft being longer on the Merc trans,I am thinking about putting my 55 sunliner back close to original after I retire and starting to collect the parts now so if the Merc tans is longer that might be the one I want. Right now I have to remove the driveshaft to grease the front U joint with the C-4 so a Merc trans will probably get the U joint past the X member making greasing a little easier,I might look into a 55 Merc parts car so I can get a 55 292 but will have to get the Ford rear end.

As far as I know, the Ford and Merc were the same length in '55. KulTulz is a Barner that used to work for the MEL Div of Ford and seems to be very knowledgeable about trannies. IM him and ask his opinion.
