Hello, just wondering if someone would be able to shed some light on how to remove the steering box, I have removed the 3 x bolts that hold it to the chassis, and the bottom nut to the link, what is the best way to remove it from the steering Colum?

There is alot of slack in the steering, was going to get the box rebuilt

Cheers, Mat

The old Fords had the "deadly spear" that means the shaft goes from the box all the way to the steering wheel, you need to remove the steering wheel, get the car up on a hoist and drop it out from the bottom. On www.1954ford.com member rustyfords has blog that has pictures of the box dis-assembled the same applies to your '55.

I have always brought them out through the top with the column attached. You need to remove the two screws that hold the column to the bottom of the dash and also remove the two piece blanking plate on the kick board/firewall. The pitman arm needs to be removed from the steering box also before you can bring it through the floor. Of course gear linkages, and neutral safety switch if fitted need to be disconnected.
If you have room to drop it under the car, you will need to remove the clamp around the column at the top of the box and slide the box off the column - maybe pretty tight.

Same as Rick said, up thru the top, but I have always slid the steering column housing up off the steering shaft prior to pulling the gearbox & shaft assembly thru the hole to avoid the gear shift lever bumping into something. It is necessary to turn the assembly to allow the gearbox to come up thru the hole.
