Hello, I have a 55 Fairlane, The speedo has seized, (instrument end) got a new cable and it wouldn't spin when connected to the dash, what is the best way to remove the speedo cluster? Cheers, Mat

The best way is to remove the instrument panel so you can see what you're doing. The 2nd best way is on your back with a drop light, inspection mirror and strong reading glasses. You'll be doing it by braille so have some good curse words ready. Don't forget to disconnect the battery 1st.

The speedo head is held in by four nuts holding a clip. Unhook wires first, then the nuts. Keep your mouth shut and wear big glasses. I use 1/4 drive for this job.

Dobbie / Don or anyone ... I too need to repair my speedometer and was looking at how to get at it, and I see there are 4 nuts which seem to hold the Astra dial in place.

Question: Is it possible to undo these, remove the Astra dial, and then get to the speedometer and instruments from the top?

After the wires are free, remove the four nuts and clips and the whole head comes off from above. Lay in on a towel on the bench and take it apart.

I'll need to do this too. With the cable connected and while driving, it seems like the speedo is gonna blow up. It makes a really nasty cluncking rattling sound.
Post pictures if possible.
Man.. I've got sooooo much to do on the car.... Road inspection in November...

If you can turn yourself upside down under the dash and prop a troubleshooting light so it shines up there, you can remove the four nuts that hold the instrument cluster to the dash. Then get up, sit in the front seat and pull it out carefully and lay a towel in between the dash and the cluster while holding it, pull off the two wiring hooks in the back to relieve the tension on the wire harness, then you can easily remove the wires from the gauges with a 3/8" nutdriver. Then pop all your light sockets out of the back of the cluster and unscrew the speedo cable from the back, all while sitting in the front seat. I have done it this way a few times
