I got a replacement "plug-in" speedometer cable from Carpenter's and since I could not find any guidance in my shop manual as to the correct way to install it, I wanted to see if someone could lend a hand. After I remove the plate that holds the cable connection to the transmission, do I need to remove the gear, insert it into the plug-in and reinsert into the transmission? This is the first cable of this type that I have installed and appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

Yes, you have that part correct. I always put a dab of light grease on the gear where it rides in the housing. Lube the cable in the housing, it may not have much from the factory. Then, make sure the routing keeps it away from the exhaust. On the top of the speedo head where the cable screws on, there is a tiny brass cap. Pop it off and put two or three drops of ATF in the hole, then snap the cap back on.
