Running 272 Y block on 12v. Still had 6v starter motor which gave up!!
Followed some posted instructions on this site or the other 272 Forum.
Dont forget this is a RHD with steering unit(power Steer} in the mix.
released the mount bolts RHS LHS just slacked off a bit. This was enough to remove from bellhousing. Then dropped it out big eng first out through steering arm hoses etc and turning steering so could clear tyre. Came out pretty good!

Will be fitting a new 12v high torque starter sourced locally in NZ.
Question now: There is a seal between starter and flywheel housing
EBU: 6436 B. Its in pretty good shape. What is the purpose of this seal? Is it a type of damper? Should I refit it with the new type starter?
Appreciate advice.

It is a weather seal (road splash).

It keeps weather out of the bell-housing and protects the engine rear seal, trans front seal and starter drive.

If it will work with the new starter, keep it.

Ok thanks for that. Will install with new starter. Useful to be aware of the reason for such things. So therefore earthing of starter motor tends to rely on securing bolts?
