cable broke old cable has flat end fits connector and spring all i can find is cable with square end is this 56 ford

The original '55 speedo cable at the speedo end has a hard plastic coupling that fits over the square end of the cable. There is a thin spring-steel tip that inserts into the other end of the coupling. This tip actually drives the speedo. If that tip is missing, the speedo will not operate.
You can buy reproduced versions of the cable that do NOT incorporate the use of the coupling and tip. I have heard of some of these where the inner cable isnt long enough to connect to the speedo mechanism, yet the outer housing does not allow for the coupling extension, so if you buy a repo, test it immediately with both ends connected and return it promptly if it does not work.
