'55 6volt heater motor

One of the great things about the old Ford Magic-Aire system, is that you don't need to use the heater blower motor at all if the car is moving forward at a speed great enough to suck in outside air into the plenum. But if you need to preheat the passenger compartment, particularly for defrost, you need to turn on the blower motor. Up until this point, I guess I have gotten away with the motor as it is, but now it turns real slow even on the high speed, which I very rarely ever used.
Some places sell a universal replacement, canadian made, single speed motor that allegedly fits many years of Ford cars. I am skeptcal of the one size fits all mantra, and I would like to retain the original two speed so I can use the low speed.
Can anyone direct me to a rebuilder who is known for servicing the old electric motors and is known to have good reputation and workmanship?

Dave, You can probably take your motor apart, clean it and lube the bearings and restore performance. Did that with mine and with power window motors. If clean and lube doesn't help, I think I still have a good 6 volt 2 speed heater motor. I will check and if I do you can have it for the postage.

I would try to take motor apart. It is the original motor. It has indentations around the outer case that hold the two halves of the case together. What do I need to get the two halves apart?

Remove the 4 screws that hold motor into fan housing. Remove motor and loosen set screw that holds squirrel cage to shaft. Remove cage and you can access the two nuts that hold motor to plate and also allow motor to separate. Before you take housing apart, check for end play in armature shaft. May have to remove a spacer to get a small amount of play. If I remember correctly you can use a couple of paper clips to retain brushes in holder to install armature.
