'54 Y-Block

Looking at a 1954 Mercury Y block 256 CI short block for sale locally to save for a future project. I've never messed with a Y block before and since this is a first year engine that will need heads, etc. I wondered if later year parts are interchangable. I'd hate to get it and then find out that 292 - 312 heads and other parts would not bolt up. My guess is that later parts will interchange but wanted to ask the experts before I drop some bucks on this short block. Thanks guys.

Unless you have a '54 Merc or '54 Ford Police Intercepter you want to restore don't use it,some parts interchange with the '54 239 and thats about it the smaller bore won't work well with larger 292-312 heads also the cam is a one year only. You would be much better off getting a later 292 then interchange is no problem.

Thanks Jeff, I was afraid that might be the case. The "good deal" would turn into a real parts nightmare.
