54 Speedo Cable/89 AOD

Can anyone recommend a speedo cable that will give an accurate reading from my 89 Lincoln AOD trans to the original 54 sedan speedometer?

It's not the cable that gives the accuracy, it's the tooth count on both the driven and drive gears as well as the axle ratio. As far as making up a cable to attach the 54 speedo to the aod, measure the length you need, then google speedo repairs and you will find someone that can make up what you need. You will have to do some trial and error on the gears. My guess would be to start out with the gear on the cable that would have been in the Lincoln. If the speedo reads to slow, find a gear with less teeth, too fast, more teeth. One tooth is usually good for about 5 mph. Gears should be plentiful at a wrecking yard, what you need can be found in most any c-4,c-6, aod or fmx, car or truck. Just make sure the angle of the tooth is the same, some are left and some are right

You can get driven gears (the ones on the cable) on ebay. That is what I did. I just went thru getting speedometers to read accurately on three cars - trial and error in changing the gears. Try "ford speedometer gears" on ebay.

There's no need for trial and error any longer that was in the past. I went from 4.56 to 3.73 gears in my truck recently and hit it dead on using a chart like this. This particular one is for an AOD trans.

I know it's dead on due to using my gps. Using the old speedo gear with the new rear gears it was 75 mph actual with the speedo showing 60 mph
