54 Replacement Tires

Can anyone recommend a tire mfg. for my 54 tudor? It's a retro mild custom with skirts. I plan to use the original steel wheels. I don't think I can go larger than 670/15's radials and still get the skirts on. I few years back I was hearing bad things about Coker's quality control. I want to put white walls back on it. Can anyone also tell me the stock width of the whitewall.

Thanks,
Ken

I have a set of 225-70 x 15's on my 54. Aftermarket 7 inch rims (Americans), standard offset.

A 195-75x15 should work ok. A 185 might work, but not sure of the load range on this size.

I have 195x75 by 14's on the front, again Americans but a 6 inch wide wheel, standard offset.

Just go standard size with a Daimondback W/W radial.
Not sure what the size is for a 54. They are 205x75x15 for my 56.. Must be similar.

i had 205x75 on my 56 as well.next time i will use 215.if things are tight going on just let some air out.

I am using P215-75R15 tires on my '55. The outside diameter of the 215 is as close as you can get to the original spec tire. Going to a smaller diameter such as the P205 will force you to push the gas pedal down further and your speedo will be in-accurate.
I do not have skirts in the back and doubt they would fit with the skirts.
You are right, though. Coker tires are the worst quality. I don't think they expect you to actually drive on their tires, just show them.

X2 on diamond back tires. Very knowledgable, and modern tires, not old molds reproduced. Our old cars often don't have the tires and brakes of the new cars in traffic with us. I've got one car on bias plies, but the ones I drive all the time are all on Diamond back, with whitewalls or redlines added. They don't look quite the same, and some take exception to that. But I'd rather have a modified tire, than a modified front end.

dbtires.com. Don't forget the s. And I don't work there, I'm just a customer.

225 75R 15 M&S Coker mounted on the stock rims...three years ago. No issues at all.

I have diamond back www on my 51 merc. got about 8K on them, no problems. I highly recommend them. they are nice people to deal with. they can probably recommend the correct tire from their data base. they have a cross over chart to cross the old bi-ply tire #'s to the closest radial size. you won't believe the difference in handling , it is so much better. when people ask me about them, I tell them it changed my Merc to a Lincoln (lol).
