'54 moulding clips

I need a little help. Pictured is an original clip that holds the moulding to the front fenders and doors of a Skyliner. On the right is Dennis Carpenters replacement clip. Anyone have any idea how it is supposed to work? The original snaps into the hole, the replacement won't. I have searched until my eyes ache for a reproduction of the original design. Any help?

That is what I have. I need the wider ones with a push in clip. I have no idea how these are supposed to work.

When I replaced the side stainless on my 54, I used clips that have a stud on the backside. They can be shortened length wise to fit the stainless.. Got them from Restoration Specialties in PA. Bit they may have the stock ones.

Here's the problem. The FORD MPC does not show attaching parts (clips-retainers) in their early EXTERIOR MOLDING ILL's as they did in later models (showed placement and PN). The actual part ill and specs would be found in the STANDARD PARTS CATALOG for the correct period.

So one needs to go to the MPC TEXT under the MLDG BASIC PN('s) and the ATTACHING PARTS listing will be there.

ATTACHED is the BODY MLDG ILL and the clips listing, the first chart for the FENDER MLDG (16003) and the second chart for the DOOR MLDG (20938).

The PN's of the clips may help locate aftermarket replacements -

I think I might have enough serviceable ones to put into the blind holes. Thanks for the idea.

I made the exact same observation to my wife when I was going through the catalog.

I found the same listing you show, but the numbers do not cross reference to anything I can find.

I was hoping someone had actually used the aftermarket clips that everyone sells and could tell me how they are supposed to work.

AUVECO is a main supplier of aftermarket fasteners to body supply companies and body shops.

Maybe go through their catalog to see if there is anything close -

DENNIS CARPENTER is usually pretty good but possibly they are not correct in their offering?

BM 7021020-B is the SERVICE PN given in cataloging. GOOGLE that PN and you will see photos of NOS.

Keep us posted ...

The ones I have are from Dennis Carpenter. If I get them in the mail beffore the 7th I might be able to get 50% of the purchase price returned. First, I'm going to call them to find out if they have a set of instructions for a seemingly simple piece.

I figured out how they are supposed to work, but I sent them back anyway. I don't like the way they fit. In the same shipment I had received four clips with sliding studs and they are what I'm going with. I'll need some flat washers and possibly may have to cut the studs down, but I at least have a plan. I picked out the 8 best original clips that go into blind holes, the other 30 I'll use the ones with studs. Thanks Paul.

Glad you got it figured out. BTW, the clip you are describing was one to each 1954 fender side molding originally.

Let is know what CARPENTER says about the clips. Say you were able to use them sparingly?

Can you describe how you did it for others?

Carpenter gave me a code for returning the ones I don't like.

I ordered 30 stud fasteners because I have the rear qtr moulding to install as well. Just the straight pieces have 19 holes on each side (fenders, doors, qtr panels). I can post a picture tomorrow of what the front fender moulding will look like.

I went to a real hardware store (not Lowes Depot) and bought fender washers and #10 lock washers for the stud fasteners. The little washers they come with would pop out of the mounting holes.

First, the stock clips snap into the holes. I marked the front hole locations and installed the fasteners. Hook the bottom of the stock clips in the bottom of the moulding, then push in the top. It snaps into place. Install washers and nuts on the studs. Now only 32 more fasteners to go.
