54 Mercury steering question

Here is the factory set up. evintho is correct, expect to pay at least $2,000 - $2,500 for a complete factory unit, not to mention they are very hard to find. But on the other hand, they are well worth it if you do!

You know, rather than the Chinese knocking off carburetors, why do't they knock off a complete original style power steering unis, for 52' and later Mercury's and Fords?

Their carb knock offs are unreliable enough. I don't think I'd want to roll around with Chineseum power steering.

Borgenson (SP?) makes aftermarket kits for power steering for Fords, may have a kit that fits a 54 Merc. Not sure on costs.

Borgeson lists a box for the 52-64 Ford. You could probably make it work on a Merc. If the Merc’s use the Ford design box, the main problem is dealing with the solid box to wheel steering shaft. That leads to dealing with the column, and the related shifter (manual or auto) and the horn. All can be solved, but some of it’s pretty serious fabrication work. And fab work on the steering is another question.

There’s a Ford social group on the HAMB, might find something there.

Easiest way to do it is by procuring a complete original Ford power assist system from any full-size Ford or Merc, 1954 thru 1956. Get pitman arm and idler arm with mounting bracket too. Don't forget the add-on crankshaft damper.
But it will be real hard to find. Most auto salvage places that still have cars this old are picked apart pretty bad by now. May need to get what you can from junkyards then go to swapmeets or epay for the missing stuff.
Look in your original shop manual to see everything you need. It's all bolt-on, no fabrication or modification necessary. For new belt, hoses and seals and rubber bushings, most of the repro parts suppliers have them. Lares MFG can rebuild the old PS pumps, control valves and ram cylinders.
