'54 Merc. Steering box

Help: I need a replacement steering box for my '54 Merc, and was wondering what else will interchange as there are absolutely no more '54 Mercs around here. Apparently some others ('55 Ford) look identical but the steering shafts are 1/2" short. Thanks in advance: Bruce

my inter change book says there are no direct replacement, seems 54 are a one year model, you should be able to adapt the 55 to your car by adding a 1/2' to the steering shaft, all you need is a coupler long enough to add the length, then weld it in place, or drill a hole and use a grade 8 bolt, street rodders do it all the time after market steering company make a lot of adapters, get a few street rod books and check the advertisers, use your phone to contact them and ask questions

If the only difference is the length of the shaft, consider putting the Merc shaft into the Ford box. It's not hard to do. If the worm on the end of the shaft is worn, new ones are available. Might as well just buy the sector shaft and worm and rebuild you Merc box if you have to do all of that, eh? None of that stuff is very expensive.

Thanks Motorhead: I already have a NOS sector and bearings.. Where can I get a NOS worm, eh. I'd buy one in an instant if I could find one. Thanks again: Bruce

Joblot Automotive in NY is a great source for some of the gearing and other more hard to find parts. www.joblotauto.com (718) 468-8686

Also, Midwest Early Ford at www.midwestearlyford.com has these. (800) 543-5035

I have dealt with both of these businesses and have been greatly pleased. Perhaps the folks at Joblot are more knowledgeable and can help get just what you need.
