53 merc v8 overheating

I do not trust my eyesight any longer but looking at your photo, I believe that there are additional cracks in your engine block to the one you have featured.

“Mark,

I chose that reading, as it represented the temperature of air coming up through the heat riser into the carburetor, since tube goes directly into the heat riser. My logic was that the temperature of that air, directly effected the temperature of the body of the carburetor and therefor, if I could reduce that temperature, I would be able to reduce the temperature of the carburetor body and the air going into the carburetor.

You are correct, the head temperature is allot cooler.

When the original engine in my 53' Merc started overheating. I tore it down, and found a crack through the valve seat into the cylinder.”

Ok, my bad.......I didn’t realize the pics in post #2 weren’t about the question in post #1....that explained why no one else mentioned it.....Mark

flatford8,

My original answer/post, was to find out if he still had the original sensor setup for the 53'. Because if he did, they only read the temperature of the passenger side. The drivers side sensor was nothing more than an on and off switch. My thought was that the drivers side might be over heating too.

You are correct. It wound up having numerous cracks. I bought a different block and correct heads (EAC), cleaned it up, then had it magnafluxed, machine work completed and then built a new engine for my car.
