53 Mainline Trans & Overdrive

I have a 53 mainline 239 with the stock 3 speed transmission and stock overdrive. I drained the ****** and have refilled it and noticed a "fill plug" on the side of the overdrive but no drain plug. Do the ****** and overdrive in a stock set up share the ****** oil?

Thanks,
Kevin

Yes they do. However I believe that trans does indeed have a drain plug. It should be located on the same side but about an inch and a half below the OD filler plug. The drain plug takes a large hex wrench to remove. Chances are the plug is filled with grease and dirt and you can't see it. There's also a chance someone has tried removing it before with the wrong size Allen wrench and the socket is now stripped.

If you want to drain the trans with it still in the car, jack up the rear end a bit and it will drain thru the plug in the front of the gearbox. Give it a good day to drain as the passages may be somewhat clogged.

Well the ****** drain & fill and the overdrive fill plugs were in good shape, but the differential drain plug is boogered up. EZout time I reckon... I love these old cars... :-)
