53 cam for auto

I talked to Tommy (Desoto291Hemi) and have decided to wait a couple of weeks in replying him to when I get back to Minnesota. Then I can get the actual numbers and applications I have used in a couple of situations, which is what he really wanted.

At that time, I will probably compose a document on everything I have learned about this and post it to a separate thread. Anyone needing any information now can PM me.

Here's what I mean: the total duration is similar for intake an exhaust for most of these stock cams. For the EAB, I would guess the 247 figure is more believable than 269, but maybe both are wrong (or right!). Any ideas?

Given the disparity of the intake duration given for the "EAB" from all of the others, I would assume that is was recorded or transcribed incorrectly, and 247 is probably correct. Anyone who knows more about this can certainly correct me if I'm wrong. This leaves a toss-up between the "EAB" and the "8CM" as to which is the "hotter" stock cam. I have a gut feeling that it would be the 8CM, as I believe there will be more flow with a fully opened valve with .010 more lift than you would by opening the valve 3 1/2 degrees sooner and closing it 3 1/2 degrees later. Of course, this is assuming similar lift profiles, but I have a hard time imaging that Ford engineers would us radically different profiles on cams that are really quite similar.

When I built my 260" Merc I degreed both an 8CM and an EAB. The EAB intake duration measured 244 deg as did the exhaust. The 8CM measured 242 and 237 respectively.
However, the 8CM was 206/206 @ .050 lift whereas the EAB was 202/205.

8CM lift was .330 at 0 lash and EAB was .325 so that's a near wash.

I went with the 8CM due to the increased duration at .050 and a closer lobe separation of 109 vs the EAB at 111.

The engine runs very well and is quite strong with 3.54 gears and 29" tires in a '41 Town Sedan.

Thanks Terry, this is very informative. I have an NOS EAB cam in hand but no easy way to degree it since my block is at the machine shop. I measured 0.327” lift with calipers though, so right in line with your measurements and others in the web. Ken

Where on the cam do I look for the 'type' it is? I pulled one out of my attic last week that I think came from the same cracked merc block I got my 4" crank from 25 years ago.
