'52 Sedan Engine Swap

Now looking at a '52 - 4 door sedan, no motor or trans.
I've been told it's not a big stretch to go ahead with putting a later model (239, 272, 292) OHV motor into one of these. Same 3 speed trans.
Looking at this possibility based on cost and availability.
Any input would be appreciated.

If i were going with a later engine, i would go with a 302. They are a better engine and availability of parts are better. Marv

any of the y blocks are very difficult to install. you will need a truck timing gear cover and oil pan with the pickup inthe rear. a 302 ford or chev small block fit much easier. I know because I did that swap back in the sixties you also need a very short oil filter, I think the're for a tracktor, I bought mine from a ford dealer. even with the reversed sump truck pan and hurst adapter mount I still had to cut the cross member and box it for strength.

A flathead will probably be more expensive, and make less horsepower most likely but that is what I'd do. It depends on your plan for the vehicle and your budget.

You can always use a later model 6 cylinder Ford motor and a later 3 speed or automatic transmission. Very dependable motor and inexpensive.

Apparently not as simple as I assumed. Not interested in a 302 (done that in the past to a '55, and also in my '37) if I can aquire for a reasonable price I quess I'm not afraid of the flatty. I'm not looking for horsepower, just a local cruiser.

you may try a 1954 ford looks same but comes from the factory with an overhead, except for canadian cars which were still manufactured with the flathead engine until 1955.

I would look at the later 6 cylinder motors that were produced in the 70's. The ones out of the pickups would be the best.

I'm actually going on a road trip to look/pick-up a '52 2 door sedan tonight.
It's a driver, still has original flat head and three speed.
Wish me luck......
