Ok so the previous owner removed the wires from the switch. I bought a new switch. The post are marked P - R . I have 2 B post and H also a post coming off the resister. so 6 post and I have 6 wires 2 are hot. Why would the switch have 2 battery wires going to it? Also I assume that the instrument light wire would hook to the resister? so what is the R post for?

Thanks

The #12 hot wire is for the headlights. The #14 hot wire is for the tail light, dash lights, and parking lights. There are the two hot wires, one wire for the parking lights, one wire for the tail light, one wire for the dash lights, and one going to the dimmer switch for the headlights.

The light switches of this era have two "hot" connections, each connected to a different circuit breaker. One CB is for the headlights and the other CB is for the rest of the lighting.

See if any of these diagrams are helpful (these were not created by me). The last diagram is modified for 12v and turn signals.

See if your colors match these. P=black with yellow tracer, B left= yellow with red tracer, H= red with yellow tracer, R= black, B right=black with orange tracer, instrument light color is not shown.

I don't have a wiring diagram in front of me. I can check later. VanPelt has the diagrams with the color coding. The block diagrams I posted are not color coded to original Ford wiring coding.

Bob has the wire colors listed correctly in post #10.

P (Parking) Black w/Yellow
B (15A CB) Yellow w/Red
H (Headlights) Red w/Yellow
B (30A CB) Black w/Orange
R (Tail Lights) Black
(Instrument Lights) Blue w/Red

If your wiring is not the original Ford color coding then you will have to ID which wire is which. Shouldn't be difficult.

P is the wire that connects to the front parking lights
B is the wire to the 15A CB
H is the wire to the foot switch that switches Hi/Low beams on the headlights
B is the wire to the 30A CB
R is the wire to the tail lights
and the instrument wire is the one to the instrument panel light.
