Looks like when the merc crank goes in the early block i need to match the crank gear to the early cam gear(pre 48) will there be a problem putting the 40 gear on the 53 merc crank in order to turn the right direction ? Think i'm looking at this correctly. late and early cam gear are 44 tooth.

thanks kurt

The angle of the timing gear teeth controls the thrust direction but that's the only major difference. A lot of stuff can be mixed and matched on the flathead V8 engines of different eras. Using an 8BA era crank in the 221 CID era can require some work to make it fit depending on block type but it can be made to fit. Using 59A and earlier front timing cover and gears will convert an 8BA for front mount distributor but the water pumps are also affected. It can also go the other way around if a person wants that.
