51 Merc auto trans remove

Anyone have tips on removing an auto transmission from a 51 Merc? Mine is leaking all over the place and probably needs new seals.
thanks

put jack under engine at the oil pan with a wooden block, unbolt tail shaft mount, drain trans because when you pull drive shaft all the oil will run out the back of trans, unbolt cross member, bolts on top of cross member are removed thru holes in the floor pan, undo all linkage, don't forget speedo cable, remove any exhaust pipes that will be in the way when you lower trans, unbolt trans from bell housing , pull trans out the front of car, I may have missed some thing, so check real close to make sure every thing is disconnected from trans before lowering it

thanks for getting back. Right now I have the wheels off for new brakes and it's about 18 in off the floor to the spindles. Is this high enough for the ****** to clear? How does the ****** come out the front with the engine pan blocked up? Is the block across the frame? The manual shows lowering the ****** down with some sort of winch system inside the car. Would a regular floor jack work to lower it down from underneath?
thanks again

Here's what the Merc Manual says. Click on picture to enlarge. Those transmissions are big and HEAVY. /B]

Thanks. How high do I have to raise the car to get it clear? Right now it's about 18 in off the floor to the spindles. Around here in MN no ones seems to want to take it out but will work on it on site. I was wondering if an engine hoist through the car from the passenger side would be a good choice for lowering it down to the floor?

The engine hoist thru the car from the pass side sounds like it might work if your hoist has a leveling device that will "clear" the dash. Also, remove your steering wheel. I personally think your idea will work, but I have never removed an automatic from a Merc. Just be careful and use jack stands on a level surface.

HI; I just had a '53 rebuilt 3 times on warranty because we lost parts orientation and the parts 'reseated'. Also I was told that the new friction materials are necessary to go with the new fluids. Check with an experienced [old] trans mechanic. Later Newc
