I plan to change my broken transmission three speed ‘51 pickup to a 5 speed.
There are excellent websites that show how to do it.
The one I like is:
Adapting the S10 T5 to the 59AB Ford flathead.
You will need the 48 to 52 ford pickup stick shift adapter to make the rear of your 8BA V8 look like the rear of an earlier V8. They come up on EBay sometimes. Could also use one from 49 or 50 Merc.
Seems to me the hardest part of converting from automatic to any manual shift would be to get the clutch pedal and linkage.
F1 is like early Ford. 8BA manual car has a completely different or more "modern" clutch system. '49-'64 Ford universal is what Will Cap calls the 8BA bell pattern. The truck and Early Ford stuff is a way but, I think it's a lot of unnecessary work and parts whereas he could simply use the standard car bell and retain the car clutch linkage.
1. Since it's an automatic car the easy button is to simply repair or use the Fordomatic.
2. The second easist is a C4 with a 8BA adapter. AODs could present clearance issues.
3. Find a manual car and use all the clutch stuff to 1. use a 3 speed OD unit. 2. convert to 5 speed.
4. Consider Custom clutch linkage either cable or hydro. Swing pedals ??? Under floor pedals???
Whatever is chosen.....It opens a really big can of worms.
Being this is already an automatic car I would go with the original type Fordomatic or adapt to a C4.
