hi guys , I,m starting on a partial rewire on my truck, just a quick question, from under the dash a wire goes the width from left to right and goes behind the glovebox and up the channel beside the windscreen ,there is no interior light so where does it go?, its an original wire and crumbling so it needs attention.after a Christmas rest its nice to get involved again thanks jim.

It may be the gas tank sending unit wire. If there isn'/t a headliner , just tug on it and see if it moves the wire on the tank. If you have a headliner, do a continuity test on the wire and see if it goes to the top of the tank.

I think Barry is right, it is the wire for the fuel sending unit. On my '49 the wire went up over the left hand door to the sender.

thanks guys ,I,ll do a test on the sender tomorrow, maybe a little tug to see if the wire moves, would make life easier if coopman is right ...just chop it off, cheers jim.

Any of the 48-52'/s I've parted out had the gas tank and the dome light ( if equipped ) wires go on the drivers side. See if you can find where it starts out from under the dash. THat would also give a clue to what it's for.

If the insulation is yellow with a dark tracer, it is the sending unit wire. To my knowledge, there wasn't a dome light option prior to '52.

Dome lights were at least '49-on, optional and not real popular for some reason. (They are repro'ing them now) The ones I've see ran the dome light wire up and over the DS door from the light switch, and the gas sender line went over the PS door.

I believe it is the fuel tank sender wire.

yup it was as stated the fuel sender wire ....it went up the channel over the right side door and exited the other side ,it was the original 63 year old wire , I made bit of a mistake ,without thinking I pulled the end of the wire through the channel and discarded it ,I should have connected the new wire to it so it was pulled through the channel ,now when I try to thread the new wire it gathers and jams halfway round , will have a think on it and try again tomorrow, the old wire turned to dust
many thanks again for your help , jim.

Got a roll of mechanics wire? In case you don't know, it'/s thin stiff wire than can be pushed thru to attach a wire to and pull thru. Also could use an Electrician's fish tape that they use to pull wires thru in a wall. I made the same mistake and used the fish tape.

thanks barry ,I,ll give the wire a try ,never heard of fish tape,i did try with stiffish wire today but no success ,I was thinking of re routing it out of the bulkhead in a plastic sleeve ...under the floor and up by tank but of course the proper way is best and I will persevere, thanks jim.
