'51 8BA Rear Seal Holder

Howdy Guy's,

Does the rear seal HOLDER on an 8BA flathead need to be glued/siliconed in to place to prevent any oil leaks? It doesn't seem practical that it just sits there floating around without allowing oil to seep past it.

I don't think it would hurt to "adhere" the seal retainer , just as a precaution. Be sure to cut and install the seal correctly if your using a rope seal.

I would use some sealer with it - as it can't hurt. I also like the Best Gasket's graphite impregnated rope seals.

B&S: What is the procedure for "treating" , cutting and installing the graphite seal so it fits without leaking? I recall many years ago when I installed an OEM rope seal, I soaked it in oil, inserted it in the retainers so the ends protruded slightly, installed crank and torqued it to spec.

Yes I have the "Best" gasket overhaul kit with a rear graphite rope seal. Great kit.
