50 Merc springs

On a 50 Merc, is the top end of the spring where it sits in the cup, is the coil round, flattened, or half round ?

The top of the spring is flat and sits in a plastic cushion that goes between the spring and the spring perch.
The bottom of the spring is just a cut off coil and fits into a form built into the lower A-arm.

Here's a little more help. The 49-51 Ford spring pads are smaller and won't fit the Merc. The Merc top spring pads are very rare and hard to find. Noone reproduces them. What you can do is cut out a flat piece of inner tube and "contact cement" up inside the cross member OR use dish soap and slide a piece of 5/8 in ID heater hose onto the top coil. You can do the same with the bottom also, but make sure the bottom coil rests inside it's matching recess in the lower control arm. The one in the photo is an old one I saved.

Why not call Eaton Spring (ph# 313-963-3839) and see if they have those upper pads. It could be that a pad for a different make car may fit the Merc spring.
