49 Merc OD trans leak question

I have a 49 Merc in right now that's leaking out the OD solenoid unit. I am not too familiar with OD units. Is this a typical issue and how hard is it to fix? Any input welcome :)

Thanks!!!

the solenoid has a rubber o ring also if internal seal is damaged it can let oil into solenoid but im guessing its the o ring ,:)

Where exactly is the leak? If you look at the bottom of the solenoid unit you'll see a small opening which allows any buildup of oil in the solenoid to escape. On my 49 Merc O/D that location always weeps. Not anything significant, but a nuisance. If the oil is running down the outside of the solenoid it could be the O ring which isolates the nose of the solenoid housing from the trans case or the gasket that goes between the solenoid housing attachment bracket and the trans case. Google Borg-Warner O/D and you'll find all sorts of info on these units.

There is a very small oil seal that fits into a pocket on the OD adapter (the casting that fits between the gearbox and the overdrive section). This is, of course, where the solenoid is mounted. Remove the solenoid (2 bolts + rotate about 90 degrees to release and pull out). Pry out the little seal and replace with a new one. Reinstall the solenoid in the reverse manner. Be sure to test its engagement by pulling the solenoid outward (without the two bolts in place). It should pull out against an internal spring by about 1/2" and that's all. If it pulls completely out on you, then you didnt get the plunger engaged properly.....try again.

do you have those o/rings mac down here everything is now metric so difference in sizes trev

I replaced all of the seals in my Borg Warner OD from my 48 Lincoln. A local seal and bearing shop had the seals in stock.
