i have a 49 merc crank and bearings, will these work in a 59a? also, what about the clutch?

The rear main has to match the block
The rod bearings have to match the rods
The flywheel has to match the block

You'll use the main bearings for a 59A and whatever rod bearings match the rods you're using.

If you have them, I'd go ahead and run the later 49-53 rods with the insert bearings. If you don't have these rods, I'd find a set and have them rebuilt.

There is no great reason to run 59A full-floater bearings and rods unless you have already purchased/own them and the rods/bearings have been correctly setup. There are very few machine shops that know how to setup full-floater bearings these days.
