48 Transmission

I recently picked up a 40-48 side shifter transmission. Upon inspection I found straight low-reverse gears and what looks to be a late 2-3 synchronizer. I didn't realize you could mix 32-35 gears with later synchros. The unit looks to be in good shape.

How is this combination likely to perform? From what I read it could be noisier in low, but it looks like it should shift to 2-3 like any later box.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Dick

It actually uses a 67 prefix cluster gear, not a 48 prefix. Gives a lower first gear; better with a 3.54 rear. Brian

Dick,
I build a lot of early Ford transmissions and I can't ever remember
straight cut 1st and rev in a side shift box. Some '48-'52 heavy duty
truck transmissions had this type of gear set but were all, I thought,
floor shift and open drive...could you post a couple photos. I am always
ready to learn.

Hi Charley--

I thought it was odd, and didn't know you could mix 32-35 gears with later gear sets. what I think I have is a 40-48 ****** with a 32-35 cluster, L-R slider, and reverse idler all with straight cut gears on low and reverse. It is out of the car, nice and greasy, and seems to work fine in all gears. I will post a picture tomorrow if I can get to the shop.

Let me elaborate;....67-7113-A countershaft gear, 11Y-7100 low & reverse slider, 81A-7102 intermediate gear, BC-7141 reverse idler gear, 11Y-7071 main drive gear, 11Y-7061 main shaft.
This particular gearset provides a much more economical option toward rebuilding a 'new' transmission using all new parts, because [especially the cluster] these components are much cheaper than the more commonly used parts. Hope this helps, Brian

Further information to hopefully answer the riddle...the 32-35 cluster [#48-7113] has a different tooth count, looks the same as the 67-7113 but is not, likewise the 11Y-7100 slider gear differs from the 32-35 [#B-7100] in the shifter fork groove, what you have in your transmission are not 32-35 bits, except the reverse idler gear, countershaft and rev idler shaft. Confused yet?!! Brian

By substituting the 11Y-7061 mainshaft for a 21C-7061-B mainshaft, this same gearset can be used in the 40's open drive [pick up truck] transmissions. As previously stated, is a cheaper method of building a 'new' trans, and works particularly well with a 3.54 ratio rear. Brian

Brian,
Thank you for the detail on this unique transmission. We are never
too old to learn. Your explanation complete with part numbers is going
into my log book.
Thanks again,

The truck stuff kept the straight cut gears for the low reverse a while longer than the passenger cars did. As Brian mentioned, they were less expensive on a tight budget. Noisy too. You have to come to a complete stop to get into first gear without grinding.

Here's the 40-48 ****** with 32-35 cluster, slider and idler. Looks like it will be just fine. Thanks to all who helped identify this for me.

Merry Christmas

Dick
