I,am rebuilding my 48 ford F1 steering box (sector) with all new parts and have a question for you fellas who are knoledgable with this box. I know the box came from ford with gear oil in it but I,am thinking of filling it about 90% of the way with lubriplate #105 white grease (engine assembly greaase). any thoughts from you fellas on this ? all comments are appreciated.

I wouldn't - grease will create a pocket around the moving parts and then they go dry. Heavy fluids are better cause you want it to cling to the gear teeth. IIRC Rumbleseat used to make a mix of gearbox oil and STP for his '34. I've just used straight steering gear lube without problems up here in the northern states.

600W or 90-140W gearbox oil & STP......... using that mix since 79'

I agree, but 600w and 90-140w are basically the same thing. Just two different rating systems. There are some differences, mainly that the modern ratings and products are superior. 600w is not 600 weight oil by current standards normally used.

600W is not oil. It is an asphalt compound used in the Model A and T to limit the leakage, and should not be used in transmission or rear ends. Steering gears OK, but add some STP.

OK,got the box openned up. your directions was perfect. now to clean this goop up. looks like axle grease to me inside. how do you go about pressing the gear off the steering shaft ? i have a good press but once again been there done that sure would help this old fella. thanks fellas

I cut a pice of pipe to rest the worm on. I made a drver from some 3/4 bar. I ground the OD down some and cut a slot so it would pass the key. Worked fine.

I,am going to use this in a 32 frame. whats you fellas thought on how to mount it ? cut the flange off and weld a new one on with the corrected angle or use the vern tardell wedge ?

DOES ANYBODY KNOW THE O.D. of the sector shaft bushings ? I need to make a bushing driver, there in there real snug. also there 3/4" + in between the 2 bushings for the sector shaft. what would be wrong with making it solid bushings completely ? sure would give the sector shaft more support at leats in my mind. thoughts ?

Number one, bushings that thin are not easy to make and number two the F1 steering box is a fairly proven design.

I see that some suggest adding STP as well to the gear oil, Does this just thicken it more to prevent leaks? Just curious since I'm rebuilding my steering box on my 36 and will be filling it soon.

I imagine a one piece bushing would fold up before sliding all the way in- the two shorties are tricky not to damage as it is. Cutting the flange off the housing, and re-welding at the proper angle and way up the shaft collar from the original face, will buy a couple of inches in the engine bay, if you need clearance for a V-8, by letting most of the box mount inside of the rail. This is not difficult but not normal welding either, as the box is a cast piece. How you chose to re-attach the flange will be a whole 'nuther discussion, as safety is paramount, among this group of builders. Many step by step accounts of this process are available, more so on the HAMB. It's a killer mod, once installed, that's for sure, just gotta do it right cause you want to keep steering! Corn head grease from John Deer is the $#!* if you don't have any of the home brews listed and need to get something- perfect for steering box and clamshell! - Chris

I put that box in my Model A frame, Flat V8. I cut off the mounting flange, put two new bushings tight together, no space between them. Use a new piece of 1/2" thick steel for a flange. I beveled the frame side of both the box end and the new flange on the frame side... Checked and tacked the parts to get the right set up. Pre heat parts well, gas torch. Use nickel rod and arc weld the parts, both sides...

I may have put the bushings in after the welding...
