47 transmission

I have a 47 trans with a broken cluster gear(29-24-18-14). I also have a good cluster gear but with the first gear of 28. Question- can I use the 28 tooth gear with my main shaft with 16 teeth? The broken one is the kind with 2 tabs on one end instead of the 4 slots. I know I would have to do a little modification to the spacer, but not sure if it would even work.

A 29 tooth cluster cannot be replaced with a 28 tooth cluster gear. If the main drive gear has 16 teeth, it would be correct for the 28 tooth cluster gear and not for the 29 cluster gear. Maybe that is what wiped out the 29 tooth cluster gear. The teeth in the main drive and the cluster gear always add up to 44.

You will not be able to make that work.
The spacers- thrust washers - that have two or four slots are interchangeable. That is to say, you can use the cluster with the proper thrust washer.

Thanks guys. I miscounted the teeth on the main shaft. It has 15. I ordered new parts from VanPelt so things should be ok. Now if I can figure out why there is so much clutch chatter with a new pressure plate and clutch.

The 46 I had in high school had a bad cluster and i had no luck in finding one (in my pricerange), in the junkyard I found a later trans partially apart, it looked the same inside except the bearings were loose needles instead of caged, and 1 less tooth ---it was all I could find, got a broken package of the needles to make up for the missing ones and put it together, turned smooth on the bench---put it in the car, ran quiet, survived many sidestep downshifts, and was still working when I sold the car ---I didn't know that it couldn't be done, don't know what the trans was from, it had no bellhousing, the job only cost me 2$ for the needles and the cluster was free because I had learned I got a much better price on any parts bought at that junkyard if I brought a small "bottle" that was full to match his many emptys every couple of visits

I don't know if your gear would turn out as good as it turned out for me (or if it would even work at all) but I was amazed how well it worked for me ---I just wanted first and reverse to work again

Clutch chatter can be caused by worn out drive train mountings. The earlier Ford passenger and light commercials have radius rods that keep the engine/trans from being pushed forward when the mounts are worn but that practice was eliminated in the later cars. You may need to check the condition of the front and rear engine mounts to insure the drive train isn't moving around and causing the clutch linkages to get out of whack.

Some of the modern replacement clutch pressure plates and discs have been suspect of problems as well. Many of the folks on this board, including myself, use Ft Wayne Clutch to rebuild our old original parts back to specs in order to eliminate this problem.

Check the clutch finger height with the pressure plate bolted down...
I think that this is a good thing to do as an install step.
I've found this as a problem that causes chatter.

The mounts are all new and tight. No radius arms on this one. I am going to check the arms heights now. I assume there must be an adjustment bolt on the 3 arm type. I'll find out.

1947 Ford. Just some info. I had the same problems. I have all new mounts and i installed a Fort Wayne clutch and machined the flywheel. Chatter was completely gone. I couldn't make it chatter no matter how hard i tried. It came back about 3 months later and not a lot of miles. Just learned to give it more gas and let the clutch out more slowly to eliminated it. I year later i down shifted from 3nd to 2nd and the transmission started to knocked real loud in first second and reverse. It ran fine in 3rd. Took it apart 3 teeth broken off the main cluster and 3 teeth off 2nd gear. I found a used transmission got new seals and new synchronizers. I don't know why all the teeth broke at once or broke at all but it seems ok for now. Getting quick at getting these trannys out. Thanks to Mac van Pelt for his help on the phone and his book. Bill

No adjustment on the arms. One was .050 off from the other two. Ground it off; now will have to wait to find out if that made a difference. Hard to see how that little could matter. You are right about VanPelt. He is always willing to listen and help. I order as many parts as I can from him.
