Been a while since I posted...but I recently bought a 3/4 ton '47 Ford Panel truck. I haven't picked it up yet, so this post is a bit premature, but I can't help but think about this or that.

It doesn't have the original motor and transmission...those have been replaced with the belly button chevy 350/350 combo. I'm okay with that for now...even though they don't sound or look as good. I was wondering how strong the original rear end in those trucks were. My guess is they are pretty stout, but I have zero experience with this vintage ford truck.

thanks, E

stout, but probable a low gear great for spinning the tires off the line. expect ratio to be 4:11 or 6:67

There was no 3/4 ton in '47. Ford made jailbar 3/4 tons pre war but not post war. It'd be a one ton if it has the 122" wheel base. And the Timken axle would be either 4.11/1 or 4.86/1. The axle will handle the power. I have a 50 F-3 Marmon-Herrington wrecker that has a 283 Power Pack 4 barrel (220 horse) that was swapped in many years ago. The p.o. attempted to pull a stump with it and bent the boom trying. Claimed the thing did one heck of a wheel stand. The rear end handled that no problem. Stu
