46 transmission

Just reinstalled newly rebuilt transmission in my 46 coupe.

Works fine - EXCEPTING- will not downshift from 3rd to 2nd unless you brake
to a very slow speed while keeping pressure on the shift lever - then it will
eventually slip up into second. Appreciate any suggestions as to what is possible problem and solution.

Wrong area, but you need to double clutch it to downshift unless you bring the speed of the engine up to the speed to be in 2nd gear. If you google "double clutching" you will see what needs to be done.

Take the trans back to the rebuilder, my 46 survived many 3-2 downshifts of ramming into 2nd as the foot slid sideways off the clutch pedal the moment I entered the 50 mph zone from the 30 zone

I would look at the shape of the teeth on the ends of the gear, the blocker ring, and sleeve, if they are rounded they are worn ---the other possibilitys are bent shifter fork, I don't think the interlock sleeve/balls,spring because they are more of a factor in 1-2 shifts. ---a bent fork will try to move the sleeve crooked causing it to bind ---perhaps that can be checked in the car by removing the side cover and looking for uneven wear on the fork.

You don't need (assuming it was properly rebuilt) to double clutch a '46 transmission when going from 3rd to 2nd. That went out after the Model A. Take it back to the rebuilder and let him drive it.
