'46 rear main seal

I must be missing something. I ordered an oil pan gasket set for my '46 Ford V8 and got the gaskets and a bunch of white ropes. One fits perfectly in the groove in the front of the oil pan. But nothing in the set matches what I took off the rear seal... seems like there should be a formed piece to fit the groove in the rear main (see right hand pic). Possibly the wrong set, or is my '46 engine something else?

Last time I had the pan down I replaced the black seal where it came from after cleaning out the pan. I never thought I'd have this running and driving.

I dropped the pan because I'm chasing low oil pressure...65psi at start up, drops to almost zero after 5 miles. Wanted to check the clean-out at the front of the crank. I have two gauges, one is mechanical aftermarket and both agree.

There should have been a cork piece that fits in that groove for the pan to seal against. Like what you removed, and maybe you'll have to re-use it

I found the cork piece, hiding between the cork pan gaskets. Fits perfectly. Also bought a NOS gasket set on Ebay, but all the pieces were quite shrunken! Nice display piece anyway...

One does not have to accept defective items on Ebay... Ebay has a grievance prossess in place that makes way for the buyer to recover price and- in my recent experience- shipping on items missrepressented or defective...

You can use your NOS gaskets simply by soaking them over night in water. They will come back to size and shape. You can also wrap them in a moist towel and put them in the microwave.
