My 46 Merc.has been running eratic latley.It starts after one rev.idles nicely runs great for about a mile or two then starts bucking and running eratic,backfiring out the exaust.I checked the coil[ok]changed the condenser,fooled around with the carb.No luck.I then ran a wire from the battery to the coil with a resistense unit in it,and disconected the wire from the existing switch/resistor.The problem vanished.I then bypassed the original resister a put one on the coil.No more problems.The original resister would open when it heated up and conduct when it cooled slightly.When I checked the resister cold it appears to be ok.
