46 Fan Assembly

The journal bearing parts and gaskets are available from the early Ford parts suppliers. A rebuild might be in order. They called out regular motor oil in most Ford manuals but I believe gear oil was recommended for leakers in a Ford service bulletin.

The old service info that I have, specifies 90W gear oil. Says the same on the old decal. No matter, whatever you use, I suspect you have too much oil in there, otherwise it wouldn't be leaking. Depending on which service procedure you choose to read, you either put some in there, then turn the hub so the hole is 'down', and let whatever drain until it stops. Or, after you have done the above once, then next time put 2 or 3 or 4 DROPS in there when you service it. In my case, maybe once every couple years, or maybe once every couple thous miles, whichever applies.

Thanks to you all. I now believe that I have over filled it. I will drain it and go with a few drops....39Jack

The capacity is about 2 ounces.....use 90W gear oil rather than 30W motor oil. The procedure is to fill thru the little hole in the fan hub assy (has a slotted screw to plug the hole). Rotate the hub till the hole is down at 6 o'clock position. The design inside the hub is such that the correct 2 oz will remain inside and the excess will drain out. Keep a rag under the hole when doing this to prevent the oil from getting on the fan belts. Then, rotate the hub so that the filler hole is back up at 12 o'clock. Replace the plug and wipe it clean.

Repeat the procedure with each oil change. Maybe an ounce at each change. If you dont see any oil drain out be cautious...you may need add more. It could be leaking some out during the previous mileage.

New shaft and spindle bearings, as well as gaskets are still available. We keep these in stock.
