46 59A-B engine in 35 Coupe

Bob Drake also has the U-shaped adapters for mounting the later engines (81A, 99A, 59A, etc.) into the 32 thru 36 cars. I assume the 32 thru 36 mount isolators would be used with these but I've never done this mod.

Boy. They look identical. I would call and ask what the difference is in them.

I would think either would work.

the difference in the pads is the early frames have a smaller hole for the bottom pad. yes, the u shaped conversion bracket sits on top the pad, so you still need it. i have a set of the real ford brackets, they are 1/4" material, and 1-7/8" tall. the top studs that match up to the newer water pump is about 3/4" offset from the hole that sits on the pad. sorry, they are not in the car yet, so i can not say which way that 3/4" off goes, if you wish to make some. i will post a photo if you are more the fabricator type

I am not sure what the u-shaped brackets are. My car doesn't have them. It has been running & driving without them. I am just replacing the motor mounts and couldn't tell the differences by looking.

You could post a picture, I am curious what u shaped bracket looks like, but I am pretty sure I don't need that part just the engine mounts.

I called Drake they said the difference was the

B-6038-K for a 32-36 was 7/8" at the top of the taper on the upper rubber pad

78-6038-K for a 37-51 was 1 1/8" at the top of the taper.

They suggested the earlier style which matched what my car has in it now when I double checked.

Here are a few photos. A mixture of homemade and original style.

thanks for the photo jseery! i think it was mart from across the pond that has a photo of his coupe with 2 motor mounts stacked on top of each other to raise the motor. remember you should be aiming to have the nose of the crank line up to the hand crank guide, whether or not you want to use it, thats where the motor should sit.

Here are a few more pictures of the original spacer. These spacers were provided by ford when putting a later flathead into an earlier car. I imagine most people threw them away thinking it was some kind of farmer modification.

You DO NOT need those U shaped spacers when installing a 59 series engine with '37-'48 water pumps in a '35 Ford that has a stock unmolested front cross member. Trust me, I've installed plenty of 59 engines in '35 Fords. Where you do need those U spacers, is installing the later 8ba engine, with 49 Merc water pumps in a '35 Ford with stock front cross member. I did this installation in 1960 in my '35 3w Coupe. If I had used truck water pumps on the 8ba, I would not have needed the U spacers at all.

I had to make something like those spacers to make my '51 Merc with stock water pumps fit my engine test stand, which was set up for 59A type engines. Not only do they raise the mounting surface, but they make up for the difference in the actual spacing difference in the width between the respective mounting holes. Is this difference also present in the early vs. late pre-8Ba engines?

Edit : "JM" types faster than me; I think we're saying the same thing, though.

its hard to argue with the facts, two photos and john has done a bunch of them is facts!! isnt the water outlet style mount nearly level with the pan rail, where as the 37& up pumps the mount is higher up? also, is that where the original 35 pulley sits? no crank guide? gotta learn somthing every day here!

Yep, I think we are :). If your test stand was set up for a 59 engine and you want to set an 8ba engine in that stand, depending on which water pumps you use, in some cases you would need those U spacers or maybe another donut rubber pad stacked on the first one to take up that space.
Now if you put a 59 engine in a '34/'33 you would need a U spacer or some other means of spacing the front of the engine higher to get the crank to line up with the crank hole in the grille.

Which motor mounts should I use putting 59AB engine in a 35 Coupe. They look the same in these photos. Sorry if this has been answered. I couldn't find it by searching.

They probably used the same illustration for both ads, but there are differences in the early vs later mounts. Order the set advertised for the year vehicle you have.

I put a 59AB engine in my '36 in 1954, I used the stock 37-48 waterpumps and motor mounts, I have done several for my friends, a bolt in application. The 8BA/RCM engines need the C adapters with Merc or truck water pumps. The Ford car water pumps will not work in a EFV8..
