Ford of England actually supplied a cam-swap kit for flatheads: Essential part was 16 wedges shaped to go under the valves and holdemup.
You could then either invert engine or drive yourself crazy holding up the lifters with clothespin and rubber band technology...

Wouldn't this work with any kind of lifter, solid or adjustable??

Yes, but with the adjustables you could readjust after to suit the new cam.
