Is there anywhere other than the tag under the hood to find which model (77C, 77A, 72A, 72B, 77B) my 42 coupe is? I can not read the firewall tag it is too faded, I have been told that it is a Super Deluxe Coupe but would like to know for sure, any help would be great.

Does your car have the trim around the side windows? I believe only the Super Deluxes had the trim around the windows. If the trim is missing you might check for evidece of the holes having been filled. You might find holes in the front drivers fender where the Super Deluxe badge once was too. I have a 46 Super Deluxe business coupe and it has that trim and badge. Hope this helps.

Inside trim around window is a wood grain trim, Is that what you are referring to? Does not have the Super Deluxe badge on front fender but could have had holes filled before I got it.

You don't say how original your Coupe is, but this might also help:

According to the '42 salesmans reference manual, the Deluxe had straight grain Mahogany wood-graining whereas Super-Deluxe had Burl Walnut on the dash and interior window frames.

The trim that 46fatford refers to is the thin stainless trim on the outside of the doors and rear side windows.

Bumpers were different also, deluxe cars had '41 Super Deluxe bumpers and Super Deluxe had the '42 - early '47 style of bumpers.

I suspect the the back window in the Deluxe car had no stainless trim around it and the Super-Deluxe had this trim, but I am not sure about this. Others may know more about this.

Maybe a bit late , but i missed it at the time.

Just for the record my 42 six cylinder coupe had the stainless trim around the doors.
It also had the 46 type bumpers, but the could have bee´n swapped out over the years. But he holes for the trim was factory style.

There is some confusion on this thread about TRIM AND MODEL. There is a super deluxe SEDAN COUPE, model 72B, and a super deluxe COUPE model 77B.( two different body styles). There is a deluxe SEDAN COUPE and a deluxe COUPE(no window trim). There is also a Special COUPE model 77C. (almost no trim).

Have I missed something? Have you looked at the stamped serial number on top of the left frame rail or the number on your title? The first numbers of that are the designation of your car.
Hope that helps

The VIN numbers only denote the drive train type. Bs were early 4-cylinder models, 18s were 221 V8 models, 99s were 239 CID models, and so on. The body numbers were mostly considered to be irrelevant for titling purposes. Most states would only designate 2-door, 4-door, and convertible related information on the title but that depended on the state it was registered in.

Visually, you can tell the longer sedan coupes from the 5-window types. The windows behind the B pillar and length of doors usually tell the tale.
