hi - i just bought a 1942-1947 (or 48 not sure) banjo style open driveshaft rear end out of a ford truck. i want to install this rear in my 30 model A coupe that has a 1950 flathead V8 with a 3 speed trans. i picked this rear because it looks like the stock model A banjo style rear and has juice brakes and will (i think) hook up to my open driveshaft for the 1950 flathead / 3 spd. i am a little concerned because when i rotate the yoke on the rear back and forth there is a lot of play before the axle engages. does anyone know what is acceptable for this kind of play or how to make adjustments (shims ?) to tighten this up ? i would like to install the perches on this rear so i can run the stock buggy style spring. i need to come up with something to stabelize the rear and take the place of the wishbone (planning on attaching to the frame on both sides) any thoughts or suggestions on this project ? thanks for reading and thanks for any help. - john
29' model A coupster, 29' model A truck, 30' model A coupe, 55' chevy gasser, 64' C10 truck.

Use 37-39 rear radius rods (they'll bolt to the bottom two bolts of the backing plate/axle housing with longer grade 8 bolts). Do not mount them to the frame rails! This will fatigue them. They need to have tie rod or rod end bungs welded in them and be mounted in close the the front universal joint so they pivot with the car. Having them on the frame rails turns the whole rear end into a big anti-roll bar.
Ring and pinion play is adjusted by different thickness gaskets between the axle housings and the banjo. See here... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=462776
Be aware that most open drives from pickemups are 4.11 which will give you greater oomph off the line, but higher revs on the freeway.
Hope this helps.
