I have a Jailbar Ford pickup with a tag on the inside of the glove box door that reads "Model 5G82". Can any one decipher? Also Engine # 298886? Thanks.

What year is it? VIN should be on Top Front Left frame rail under horn if a V8. (as well as on that tag) Engine number means nothing....I suspect 5 MIGHT mean 1945, 82 MIGHT mean Panel Delivery , 1Ton, 122" wheelbase....

I'm with rawlir, Take a wire brush and your camera to that driver side frame rail just forward of the firewall and get that vin #. If you have a registration or title (I hope) you could give us that number as well. Is the pickup box 6 1/2' or 8'? The shorter box means 1/2 ton and the 8' box denotes a 3/4 or one ton. The letter G from the glovebox often refers to the six cylinder engine as opposed to V8. Which is yours? Oh, and welcome to the fordbarn!

Gary, I'm going to take issue with your instruction to use a wire brush on the frame to reveal the serial number. Please, please, revise your advice to use nothing more aggressive than a kitchen sink scrub brush. Those serial numbers were hand stamped, often on hangover Monday mornings, and the years between then and now have usually not been kind to them. A bit of detergent and gentle cleaning, followed by a chalk rubbing can bring out the numbers... unless previously destroyed by rust and a wire brush.

OK, Alan, I Do stand corrected. I understand how important it is to have a readable serial number on the frame.
