I am having trouble getting my new brake drums on my pickup, the brake drum does not want to sit right when i put it over the brake shoes, it sits low and wont go over the backing plate. I have had the drums turned and shoes arched, and adjusted the the brake shoes at the bottom and the top. Any ideas on this? the only thing I can think is maybe wrong shoes? thanks

just did that, the surface of the drum measures right at 2 in and the shoes are 1.75 wide....I was able to get the drum on after i loosened the bottom brake shoe cam and took off the spring but still sits a little low, i think i may be in need of some new cams for the bottom.

behind the bottom two bolts are an eccentric cam and some brass adjustment shims, round with a triangle hole. the points on the two bolts must face each other and the cams on the two top adjustments must be completely backed off. there are several instructions sheets on how to adjust these brakes. google them

The shoes don't appear to be the problem. Do you have the proper adjustment instructions like Alan suggested?

yes i have the right adjustments the indentations on bottom bolts are facing each other, I think im gonna order new cams for them then retry it.

The long shoe should be toward the front and the short to the rear, they both look like long shoes to me in the pic. Walt

When I stated the shoes do not appear to be the problem I was referring to being wider than the drum! Walt brings up some good points.

When I reviewed the attached pix I too noted that both brake shoes appear to be long in lieu of a short shoe to the rear and a long shoe to the front.
As I recall Fords brakes differ from the majority of the other brands which generally have the short shoe to the front.

We now, it would appear that I made a mistake in my earlier comment about short/long brake shoes.
A little while ago I went out into my garage to check the two sets of Ford brakes I have. One set is '39-41 the other is '42-48. These are complete brake sets with the backing plates, shoes and wheel cylinders installed into complete units.
The brake shoes are all the same length with the Ford logo stamped into the shoes. The linings are all NOSR.
I have no idea why I have/had, it in my head that Ford used a short shoe on the rear portion of their brakes.

Original FACTORY shoes for LOCKHEED-type Ford brakes were LONG to the FRONT, and SHORT to the REAR. The ORIGINAL wheel cylinders were also LARGER end to the FRONT, and SMALLER diameter to the REAR. Some NORS/aftermarket stuff had BOTH shoe linings long, which has no ill effect on operation. DD

So the length of all shoes is the same, should there be a short one and a long one and what is the length of each. Thanks for all the help everyone.

By the looks of things are you trying to put on new MT Lincoln drums?

In the original pics, the lower cams are not fully de-adjusted. The thin end that protrudes past the nut has a small dot on. they should be aligned dot to dot, with the flats sort of horizontal, or parallel to each other. The cam bolts don't wear out, in my experience, I can't see what "trying new cam bolts" would achieve.

Mart.

i agree with mart - your anchor pins in the pic are adjusted wrongly.

here is how they should be when backed off - the flats are horizontal and the dots are on the inside facing each other.

and here is how yours are - ive lightened your pic so you can see what way they are facing - the flats on your anchor pins are facing up and down however they should be horizontal.

The brake drums came from c&g Ford and thats what they list for a 41 ford pickup. As for anchor bolts not is the right positions thats just where they ended up before i took the picture. I have turned those thing 360 degrees trying to get the drum to fit, I took the shoes is to get then shaved down.... Thanks for the help ill let you know if this works....
