41 Ford GP

I have drug my 41 Ford GP prototype jeep out and started to wake it up after somewhere around 20 years. Believe it or not parts for those things are as hard and expensive as 32 parts!

THe Ford GP'S were never released for overseas. Most , stayed in the USA. I think the British got some for desert use early in the war. The production contracts were few and small. After the war, most that survived were sold off thru Camp McCoy in Wisconsin. I have a friend who restored one back in the late 90's here in Connecticut. He got alot of parts thru people in the Wisc. area. The Russians got alot of GPW'S ( same as Willys MB'S ) and even copied and built them illegally.
THat's a tough resto. THere are some parts being produced, but not alot.

Is that the jeep with the 4cyl. flathead made by Ford? If so I've built a few of them. Every piece on that engine has the letter f on it. Also has a timing chain instead of just gears, cam turn in the other direction. I built one a few tears ago for a guy restoring, the top of each head bolt had an F on it, 9 of them the F was rusted off, the guy paid 90 buck for 9 new bolts. Walt

Ford made the Willys "Go-Devil" four under license, and resorted to adding the script F on various bolts and parts when the gub'mint said no more badging of vehicles by manufacturer. Willys went to timing gears in the "Go-Devil" after WW2.

At least the early GPs had the N-series tractor engine. Earlier prototypes had the tractor engine and Model A transmission.

Hooray for coal miners! Yes the GP has the N engine, A trans, BorgWarner transfer. The engine block is the same as the 41 commercial as it has a fuel pump. Outside accessories are a little different. It has a down draft Holly carb, verticle dist that bolts up to a two bolt flange like the commercial. I have been at Ft McCoy and that area many times and did not run up on a GP but do know that there are avid collecters of military vehicles up that way. I have seen one other here in the Knoxville area and one Bantam jeep.

Hi all; The MVPA international Convention is coming up July 25/27 in Portland Or. They expect to have 7 DKW's [ducks] for river cruises. There are several Jeep experts in the national and locally. Military Vehicle Preservation Association that is. Newc
