40 Spare Tire Mount

Building a 40 pickup. I plan to use a rear (passenger side) fender that has the inset/dip for the spare tire. But, my running boards are both flat. I see in catalogs where they sell runningboards with a matching inset/dip for the spare.

Is it necessary to have that type of running board in order to use a side mount spare tire setup or can I use my flat ones?

Thanks.

I didn't know they made a flat running board. Mine are ribbed and have the provisions for the spare mount. I would like to find a section of running board and weld a section in mine because I'm not using the spare mount location on mine. Any photos?

Does yours have the dip in the running board on the spare side? If you want to see a pair of flat ones, there is a flat set on ebay right now.

Does anyone mount a spare with a fender cut out - flat running board combination?

Thanks Barners.

My 39 has the dimple in the fender and the running board is flat. I saw a 41 PU just a few months ago that had the same combination. I would think that a dimple in the running board would be an invitation for rust.
