40 pickup bed

I'm reconstructing the bed on my 40 pickup project. Need to know if the original bed subframe had metal crossmembers at the front and back. Only the middle ones remained on my old setup. There will be a new u-shaped rear sill at the back, but is that supposed to hold the wood above it? Seems too lightweight alone. I know about the rectangle wood adapter kit that goes around the edge (above subframe), but it looks as though it still needs metal support at the front and back?

Thanks Barners.

Northernclassictrucks.com has a great picture of their sub frame 38-41 on there website.

Also there is a great book titled "Ford Pickups 1932-1952" by Mack Hils which has a picture of a 1939 subframe on page 79

Good luck with your project
Mine is a 1937 Ford Pickup

I contacted Northern Classic Trucks and the owner was very helpful with information. He says that he is going to post some more usual photos and information on his site to serve as a guide for those who are assembly projects. Great guy.

There are no "metal" crosspieces in the front and back that bolt the bed directly to the frame - there are only wood ones that the bed "sits" on and long bolts pass through the bed and wood into the frame. The two metal center pieces fall to the front and back of the rear crossmember - more or less. You can tell the mount points (if you have a real truck frame) as there are metal "wedges" underneath the top lip of the frame rail so the bolt/nut are "square" or "vertical" when in place, just like the two center metal pieces have "twists" on the ends, again to make the bolts vertical. If not, the bolts would end up at an angle and you would probably "pull" the bed out-of-shape - you can easily make up the wedges as they can be made of hard wood or metal.
