40 hood hinge

Leaving a car show I closed the hood and was shocked to see it go all wickywacky. One of the rear upper hinge rivets had broken off. I am really surprised as the hinge hasn't gotten much use.

Anyone else have that problem. Drake sells by the pair so I will probably try to weld a washer on to the rivet stud.

Pretty discouraging.

I have seen this happen with some frequency. The "peening" on the rear of the rivet will wear away and bamm! the arm will come off.
This is especially prevalent amongst the repop hinges as all too often the peening is very "light".
If your hinges are otherwise in good condition, it is easy to replace a rivet. Also, you can buy rivets at your local hardware store. Cut to length, about 1/8" longer than the total thickness of the material to be assembled... place the new rivet in pace and from the back, peen over the unfinished end of the rivet with a small ball peen hammer. Work from the outer edges inward.

Thanks to all for your response and help. I'll take it apart and decide which method to do.
