40 Ford Windshield Wipers

Never had one off, and I would imagine the lack of response here is for similar reasons. Always looked like one of those "assembled at manufacture and don't mess with it" items to me.

The chains come down and wrap around the pot metal part on the movable arm that goes to the motor and is held by the last "teeth" pinched over the chain link. When assembled correctly there shouldn't be more then a link or so at each end extra. It all pretty much only goes together one way.

I reworked mine over the Winter and one side was bad and the other was ok. So I took some photos of the good side and it was trial and error after that. It's such a small area to work in, but after a few times in and out I got it to work. I brush cleaned both with spirits and sprayed both with white lube and they both work great now. NOT easy though. Good luck.

I took mine apart to have rechromed but I didn't remove the chain. After finding the price was more than Carpenters repop I decided to put it back together. I tried to remove the chain and the shaft only turned so far. What I'm getting at is you will have to make sure the chain is in the correct position. I don't know how to describe its position on the shaft but could disassemble mine again if your not sure and measure it. I do know the shorter arm goes on the left hand side as in the pic I've attached.

I'm looking to buy new repops or one really nice right hand side(my left side is nice) or an affordable chromer. PM me if anyone knows or has one or both you want to sell.

Funrunr-- I just today put a pair of those together. The disk with the hole for the shaft that has the chains goes in the housing with the chain hooks on the disk UP and the chains hanging down over both sides. Again, the fixed part of the chain is closest to the TOP of the chrome housing. Hold the housing upside down and lead the chain over each side of the disk and with the 2 chain ends in your hand let gravity take the disk into the housing, making sure the orientation of the disk is correct, line up the hole for the shaft and drive the shaft in. Grease the parts of the shaft that rubs on the housing before inserting it.

The first time I did one of these I did what you did and had the disk 180 degrees off. and when looking up in the housing, it looked like the chains touched each other.
Good luck.
