40 Ford Steering Box

I am working on pretty tired 40 Ford Coupe. Steering is manual and I am thinking of upgrading to a box (no power) that will make it a bit easier to handle. I have read a bit about the 525 box but I need some testimony before going down that road. The car has a 302, C-4, 9" running gear. Any sugestions?

I have a Vega in my roadster and a F100 in the coupe. The Vega steers light years better. It is also weak. Is a 525 the same as the Vega or is it the bigger one? I would change.
A 37-48 pass box and a F1 and a F100 are all really the same inside. The pass box and the F1 actually use the same exact parts.

F-1/F-100 boxes are side steer, won't work. A '40 is cross steer and a 525 box will work good, Pete & Jakes have a mount that replaces the stock '40 frame mount and moves the box closer to the frame rail than the 525 adapter plates that bolt to the stock '40 mount. A SBF needs the extra room. Then you just need to adapt your column.

That's right, he needs cross steering (deleted the stupid post)! I was still thinking in 33-34 terms. This car sounds like it is on a Street Rod path and something in the Vega category might be the way to go.

525 is a bigger box than a Vega. Your right a Vega box is too light for a '40, even tho some people think it is fine.

I had a power box (GM similar to 525, forget the number) in my 40. It fit fine with a 351 Cleveland using a Chassis Engineering adapter. (probably similar to Pete and Jakes). As above, Vega is perfect for cross-steer, but too light for a 40.

Speedway sells a nice Rack & Pinion set up for the 35 to 40 Fords. I gave it some serious thought, but decided to just rebuild my stock box, and change headers to give more clearence for the steering box. That way I can keep my stock column, and not have to modify everything.
