What is the short black part with the white band called?
What is it's function?
Where can I get one?
I am trying to repair a similar unit.
Thanks, JIM

I have the same question. I would guess it has something to do with calibration, but just a guess.

Terry, How would you be able to determine the number of ohms resistance in that
calibrating shunt".

Could I use a modern day resistor if I knew the Ohms resistance of the OEM part?

I have a Ford sheet that shows how to modify (bend float arm) of a B5A- sending unit (last of the 6v +ground cars) to work in various years cars. Thatunit is the same for many years cars, only diff is the float arm. Will try to upload a scan of it to my 40 woodie public album.
Well, I just tried and since it is a PDF file it won't upload. If anyone wants a copy, pm me with your em address and I will send to you as an attachment.

The older helicopters I've worked on like the UH-1 had a resistance spool so a person could micro adjust the calibration of the exhaust gas temperature indicating system. This little guy on those KS senders is the same basic thing except it's smaller. They likely would trim it for calibration during the manufacturing process. The resistance could vary but but only by small increments. That's just the nature of this type of set up. It's a poor mans adjustable resistor. Once it is set, it should never need to be messed with again but FoMoCo & King Seeley would never have imagined folks restoring these units 50 or 60 years on.

If it´s a carbonfilm resistor you can adjust the value one way by grinding of the carbond film...but this only goes one way ;)
